Cougar Golf Team Begins Season in Las Vegas

By Hank Eggebraaten

After coming off a strong fall season and winter indoor practice, the University of Sioux Falls Men’s and Women’s Golf team begins their spring season in Las Vegas. The tournament will take place on March 9 at Stallion Mountain.

Head coach, Tavia Rutherford says, “The Cougar golf program had a record-breaking fall and I am blessed every day to work with such great student-athletes. It’s amazing that both programs had two individual medalists and a team victory this fall. Both programs are in a great position going into the spring where we will look to compete for a Conference title and secure a team regional bid. In preparation for the spring, both teams have been working hard this winter on getting stronger in the gym, strategizing effective course management, and controlling our short game.”

The team practices at the Avera Sports Dome for the winter and also improves their strength and condition at the University of Sioux Falls Sports Complex.

Brenden Bassing, a senior on the golf team says, “We all prepared during this offseason so we would be ready for Vegas. I know every one of us is excited to see how well we perform in our first Spring Tournament.”

The team will be gone from March 6 to the 11.  During the trip they will have the opportunity to practice and play at other golf courses.

Rutherford says, “We cannot wait to kick off the spring season on March 9th in Nevada!”
