Get Out Movie Review

“Get Out” is the latest horror/thriller to hit the big screen. The film marks the directorial debut for comedian Jordan Peele, one half of the comedy duo “Key and Peele”.

“Get Out” stars Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Catherine Kenner, and Bradley Whitford.

The plot involves a young African-American man, Chris (Kaluuya), and his white girlfriend, Rose (Williams), as they visit her parents, Dean and Missy Armitage (Whitford and Kenner) for the first time as a couple. The film has a similar premise to the 1960’s film “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”, but with a horror twist.

During Chris’s time at the Armitage estate, he begins to feel uneasy with his presence at the household. Just as Chris begins to feel uneasy, the audience also feels uneasy while watching the events of the film progress.

“Get Out” is surrounded with the idea of racism and how people deal with racism. The film avoids the cliché of the family being rednecks or white supremacists. Rather the family is middle-class American’s who throughout the film acknowledge they would vote for Barack Obama for a 3rd term if they could.

The positives of the film include the atmosphere Peele creates. The audience is on the edge of their seat the entire run time, with hints of comedy sprinkled throughout to let the audience catch their breath after the tense moments.

The musical score composed by Michael Abels is a fantastic compliment to the atmosphere of the film, a horror film score that will truly send chills down your spine.

The only negative of “Get Out” would be the ending of the film, which I will not spoil. The ending delves into a Science Fiction realm that contradicts the established tone that was already created. This did not ruin the film, but it does take a moment to catch up to the new tone set up by the climax of the film.

Overall, “Get Out” is a fantastic directorial debut for Jordan Peele that will leave audiences shaken, while also make them think of how the film mirrors the world in which we live in.
