USF student lands dream job before graduation

College students get part time jobs to help them pay for college, but some college students find their dream job before they even get their diploma. Grant Sweeter from Lennox, South Dakota is one of those students who landed his dream job before graduation.
Sweeter, a senior Media Studies major at the University of Sioux Falls got his foot in the door last August as a Production Assistant (PA) at KELO-TV, a local news station in Sioux Falls.
After being on the job for a few months Sweeter heard through the grapevine that a Sports Reporter position was open. Shortly after the position was posted, Sweeter got some advice.
“The News Director came up to me and said you need to apply for this job,” Sweeter says. He took that advice and applied. “I went through the interview process in early December, and on the 12th of that month I was hired,” Sweeter says.
Sweeter’s job is to cover local high school, collegiate, and professional sports. “I get to travel to different places. I have been to Mitchell, Marshall, MN, Brookings, I have been all over the place to shoot games, and that is fun,” Sweeter says.
Being a full-time student and having a full-time job, Sweeter’s schedule is quite busy. However, Sweeter gets assistance from his Media Studies professors Nancy Sutton and Nick Poppens.
“My teachers are being awesome, they’re working with me. They understand that if I need to go out and shoot early they give me the leeway to do so,” Sweeter says.
Even though he has only worked at KELO-TV for two and a half months, Sweeter says one thing stands out. “Just getting to be apart of the KELOLAND team, and to cover sports is the best part about the job,” Sweeter says.
