‘Tis the Season of Giving

As we fall deeper and deeper into the month of December, students and staff around the country are looking forward to a much needed and highly anticipated Christmas Break, of course after the stresses of final exams have run their course.
Here at the University of Sioux Falls we practice a culture for service, in fact that’s a motto the university lives out in every day life. This holiday season, like many before, the USF community is looking to do more than just gift shopping for family and friends.
Partnering with clubs at USF like the Coo Tycoons investment club, the Vucurevich School of Business is teaming up with the Avera Neonatal Intensive Care unit to bring Christmas cheer to even the darkest to moments.
“They have a need and we want to be a partner in helping them out with that need” says Assistant Business Professor and Coo Tycoons Advisor Steve Horan.
What is that need? Avera NICU is looking for a wide variety of items. Everything from baby onesies and art supplies are greatly appreciated.
“We’re looking for all kinds of arts and crafts supplies, and baby supplies, and things like that” explains Horan.
The idea is that when families are in the NICU, not only can the Avera hospital give them little things to take home with their new child, but also help lighten the mood for any other children the families might have there as well.
“When they’re there, they’re in stress and sometimes they have older kids who have to have something to do.”
Horan has been a part of the School of Business here at a USF for a number of years and says that there’s a great connection between Avera and the University of Sioux Falls. Brad Van Kalsbeek, a Business Professor unavailable at the time for an interview, is the driving force between this fundraiser and fosters the connection between USF and Avera.
So this holiday season, remember those who might have more on their plate than the Christmas ham. With the stress of finals and all the other things that come along with Christmas, remember the reason for this holiday season and open your hearts to those in need.
