USF Production- I Never Saw Another Butterfly

Story by Amy Elston

I Never Saw Another Butterfly is set to open this Thursday night, November 12th, in the Jeschke Merideth Auditorium.

Sophie Harano, junior at USF, gave USF College Daily reporter, Joee Taylor, an insight on the play.

“Raja switches back from being young to a little bit older and she narrates and remembers her experience at Terezin.”

USF Director, Joe Obermueller explains what all went into the decision of why he chose this particular play.

“A lot of pieces just fell into place with this. We met Inge Aurenbacher last year when she visited USF and spoke and so there was a relationship that was built there and 2015 is the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camps of World War Two. So it was a natural fit to explore that particular topic.”

Last but not least, Joe Obermueller says, “I think that the question is ‘Is what happens if this is us?’  We in this country, where we have so many questions, we just can’t think of anything like the holocaust happening in our own land. And so we often times think of this happening over there and not us but what happens if this where us? Hopefully it lets the audience think about and to recognize what we take for granted so that is the question we are asking the audience to consider is that all the luxuries we have in this country is that they are worthy of being grateful for and to honor the memory of the horrific things that have happened in the past.”
