President Barack Obama to Visit South Dakota

Story by Dakota Case

For a state known worldwide for its legendary pheasant hunting, South Dakota hasn’t been happy, and for good reason. Now in his second term in office, President Barack Obama has visited every state in the Union except for the Rushmore State. It hasn’t escaped the notice of the media.

Local stations like KDLT and KELO have reported several “near-misses” by the nation’s leader as he travels the country, and the snub has quickly become the butt of many jokes. Even popular new shows like “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” have commented on the President’s avoidance of South Dakota.

“Like Uber and pink sweatshirts without glitter on them, the President has not yet made it to South Dakota,” Oliver joked.

However, on April 13th 2015, there was some big news to announce at a Watertown based technical school.

“On behalf of the Watertown School Board, we are truly humbled and honored to inform Lake Area Tech staff and students that your 2015 graduation commencement speaker will be President Barack Obama,” said Lake Area Tech President Mike Cartney.

Finally, after seven years the President is coming to the state. It may be Watertown of all places, but it’s a start. All South Dakotans can say is, “it’s about time.”
