AIGA The Professional Association for Design
What is AIGA? AIGA, the American Institute of Graphic Arts is recognized as the most important professional association for design. AIGA is the largest community of design advocates and practitioners in the world. They accomplish this by having 70 chapters and more than 18,000 members. AIGA was founded in 1914 as the American Institute of Graphic Arts, but now just displays their name simply as A-I-G-A. Believing these four letters are all that is needed in order to represent their large design community. AIGA focuses on advancing design in three different aspects; professional craft, strategic advantage, and vital cultural force.
As the largest community of design, AIGA promotes a better understanding of design values in government, business, and media. They are also able to enhance their designers’ professional development through inspirational learning opportunities for all different levels of design. AIGA focuses on sharing design work and engaging in different discussions in order to inspire designers and the public. Through their design community, they are also able to define global standards and ethical practices for not only the designers who are active but the viewers as well. AIGA strives to make the value of design in every different aspect of life known worldwide. They accomplish this by making powerful tools and resources accessible to everyone.
