School’s Out, Coo’s Out
With summer just around the corner, USF students are looking forward to being free of schoolwork. College Week had the chance to find out more about some students’ plans for when school lets out.
Junior Austin Hogie says that he’s not quite sure what the summer has in store for him, but that he’s looking forward to staying in Sioux Falls and working, possibly at HyVee. “Maybe if I become and RA this summer on campus, I’ll be here,” he said. He will be continuing his studies by taking two summer classes.
Money doesn’t grow on trees; it’s earned from hard work. Sophomore Cody Herman plans on going home and working hard this summer, for the Black Hills National Forest and as a wild-land firefighter.
Summer provides time for service as well. Sophomore Crystal Carlson is looking forward to going to the Rosebud Reservation to do mission work with Memorial Lutheran Church here in town.
“My summer plan is really to work out and get better for next year’s season,” said junior Delontra Fields. Fields is from Abbeville, Louisiana and is a tight end on the USF football team.
Freshman Max Mickey has similar plans as Fields. Instead of going back to Kansas City, he plans on sticking around in Sioux Falls. “I’ll be here most of the summer, busy with football and stuff like that,” he said.
And what’s summertime without trips to camp? Sophomore Leigh Braun gets to venture up north to counsel kids with some of her USF friends.
“I get to go up north in Minnesota and work at a camp called Camp Care,” Braun said. Her friends, Rachel DeBoer and Gretchen Ahrens, told her about the opportunity, and Braun didn’t need much more convincing than that. “I’m really excited for that,” she said.
Senior Matt Baty has a lot of summer plans, most of which involve just taking it easy. “I’m more of a go-with-the-flow type person. I’ll probably work a little bit. I might just live life, maybe go swimming a little bit. Let’s hope that’s in the agenda for the summer.”
Wherever the summer months will take them, for now, USF students are eagerly anticipating that last day of finals when school, the sun, and the Cougars will be out.
