Cougar Volleyball Wraps Up 2017 Season

Despite missing the playoffs, Cougar volleyball has secured a winning spot for the fourth time in the last five seasons. USF head coach, Joel McCartney says the team has had several short comings this year.

“We fell short this year by just feeling a little pressure with the teams that were ranked below us. It took us out of the contention for just fulfilling all of our goals,” McCartney says.

Overall, the Cougars finished the season 15-10, winning 11 home games.

Janelle Lam, is the only senior on the team and McCartney says she has great leadership that positively influences the rest of the team.

“Her leadership is tremendous, and she was willing to serve that way. Being able to bring her own personality to that role was what made it so special for us,” McCartney says.

McCartney says that she is a player that will surely be missed.

While only losing one senior player, McCartney is happy to have all of the underclassmen return next season.

“We’ve got Megan Hamstad, in a setting role, and MaKenna Rockeman, as an outside hitter. Bria Barfnecht, is our opposite hitter, and then Lexi Scott in the middle,” McCarty says.

With so many players coming back in 2018, the Cougars anticipate a great season.
