Dive in with new USF’s Swim Team
Sport Line’s new crew got the in slight with USF’s new Girls Swim team. While sitting down with new dynasty head coach Jon Maccoll, reporters Tucker Stout and Jeffrey Harman got a new gaze around the Midco Aquatic Center.
Justin Fulks catches up with the University of Sioux Falls Cougar swim coach, Jon Maccoll.
Previously coaching for the University of Las Vegas, or “UNLV”, Maccoll, began to Apply for other coaching position. After visiting other programs Jon said that the choice was easy when he arrived here. Jon says, “ I was offered a few jobs, and actually choose USF on the visit”. He continues with, reasons why he choose USF calling it an, “amazing visit”. Maccoll was later asked how he went about starting a swim team from square one. Maccoll says he and his staff got into a roll, and were able to sign very talented scholar athletes. it was not easy how ever, ” I made about 1200 calls in the first ten days” Coach Maccoll informs us. There were a few key signings for the cougars, Kyjana Webber, the number one recruit in the country. Internationally, the cougars recruited a pair Olympic qualifier, Mackenzie Crane from Canada, and Ingelin Lima from Norway. This is not Maccoll’s first time with this sort of issue; he was an assistant coach for Queens University’s inaugural season, which would win the last four, division two national titles (two in the men’s division, two titles in the woman’s division). Maccoll says he tried to stick to the same blueprint, but tailor the plan for The University of Sioux Falls. He says, “ I wanted it to fit this school, this division, and this schools identity.” A key component has been recruiting. You can catch the whole story on this week’s episode of USF sports line.
Jill Langland sits down with Sophia Deseck, a junior member of swim team, to discuss the upcoming season.
Sophia begins with what made her join the swim team; she says it’s been a part of her life since she was a little girl. Although Sophia has not participated in a swim meet on the collegiate level she feels prepared.
“I’m nervous and I’m excited” says Deseck, ” I don’t know what to expect but I’ve done some competitive swimming in the past”.
In their first pre season meet Deseck is listed to compete in the 100m freestyle, 50m breaststroke a relay race. Deseck is proud and ready to compete for the Cougars.
