“College Daily” Highlights USF Media Department’s Exciting Changes

Story by Dakota Case

It’s April. Spring is here and the air is filled with the sweet aroma of fresh opportunity. With each passing year comes growth, whether it’s physical, mental or technology, we – as well as the society we live in – are constantly growing and changing. Sometimes it’s for the worse, but it’s often for the better.

Here in the University of Sioux Falls Media Department, we’re well aware of the ever changing landscape within the world of media. News is no longer exclusively relayed through print, radio and television media. Today, we have this wonderful thing called the Internet, which allows us to keep track of literally everything we would ever want to know as it happens.

However, online news has evolved even further with the rise of social media. News agencies are now able to relay content in as little as 140 characters, producing that content as it happens while also drawing in viewers who can get their information without pressing so much as one button on their television remote control.

While we’re still a ways away from a stable, constant live news stream here at USF, we’re getting closer. This year, we have taken steps away from our traditional weekly half hour show to smaller daily updates. These updates are typically recorded on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and run Monday through Friday on our website – usfcollegeweek.com.

With the Media Department head – Dr. Gerry Schlenker – going on sabbatical next semester, the goal is to start exclusively live streaming daily updates. The measures taken over the past semester should transition over nicely and has made for a much more realistic professional news experience for all involved.

We may be a few steps behind the likes of KELO, KSFY and KDLT, but College Week is still the fourth best “television news” station in Sioux Falls, and we invite you to take this leap with us as we strive to uphold the validity of that statement.
