Sexual Assault Awareness Month
April is sexual assault awareness month. Sexual assault comes with some startling statistics,1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually assaulted by the age of 18. Senior Lori Rensink wanted to bring attention to this important topic. Rensink has an organization called Scribbles of Hope that raises money to fight against sex trafficking. She decided that during April it would be a good time to draw attention to the issue of sex trafficking and sexual assault. “We decided that April is sexual assault awareness month, so it would be a great time to raise some awareness, both on sex trafficking and on sexual assault” says Rensink.
There are several events during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. On Tuesday special speaker Ann Rossing spoke about her personal experience with sexual assault and how that has affected her life. There will be a forum and art display on Saturday at 2 p.m. to raise awareness on sex trafficking and assault. Students can also attend a short fil, and panel discussion on Thursday April 17th at 10 a.m. in Z-hall.
Rensink says that college students need to know that it is ok to be open about sexual assault. “It happens more often than we realize… and its ok to talk about” Rensink says.
